Recycled Cycles and Steve are on Twitter

Follow us on Twitter at RCSeattle and Steve's tweets at 207moment.

The 207moment is snapshot of what I am doing at 2:07 everyday. The back story goes like this; I was riding my bike across the Golden Gate bridge last summer and my watch alarm went off as soon as we arrived on the other side. My wife reminded me that on the previous day my alarm went off while touring the harbor, and the day before while we were drinking wine up in Sonoma. My point is that we all need to take time everyday to pause and be in the moment. Sometimes those moments are pretty lame. More often than not, those moments are rather awesome. Tales from the warehouse

From: Paul Priest

One of the chief pleasures of my position as Recycled Cycle's used parts processor is the ocassional instance of ingenuity that passes through my workstand.  Sure, most of what I see is formed more by the exigencies of vanishingly small margins and international economics than the wonders of elegant effectiveness, but from time to time a rare piece that has managed to satisfy or surmount these exigencies appears  I share one such instance:

Witness the Pletscher Model CS rack:  it doesn't get much respect in the cycling industry--despite being made in Switzerland-- because its single-strut design is only rated to 10kg and the mounting system is less than ideal.  Nonetheless, many people like it because it comes with a "rat trap" style spring-loaded clamp that can hold anything from a book to a basketball reasonably securely.  Nothing special there.  I've stripped hundreds of the CS rack off bikes that were originally sold in the 70s and 80s.  But recently I came across a variation of it.  In addition to the forward facing clamp, this rack has a smaller, opposing,  rearward  facing spring-loaded clamp.    What was the purpose of this additional clamp?  I pulled it up; i put it down.  I pulled it up, then also pulled up the larger, forward facing clamp and noted their relation.  Something about the space defined by these two clamps was familiar...ah hah!  I immediately sent my colleague to the fridge to fetch that which would confirm my hypothesis.  We placed the item between the raised, opposing clamps; a perfect fit where it securely sits.  Cheap and effective.

2009 Bikes on Sale

Well, the fall is officially here. The bike gods have blessed us with a couple sunny days here and there but sadly we mostly see rain. Beside brewing coffee in our new Bunn coffee machine courtesy of my buddy Jim, not much is going on around the shop. The service guys are always busy keeping the daily commuters....... commuting no matter the weather. (I love this town)

With nothing else to do we began counting the 2009 bikes we have left in the warehouse and in the corners of the basement. We have turned up some gems where we still have some good stock levels. After I chased Scott around with the broom of inventory turns we decided to put these bikes on sale. They are listed on the Sales Page under 2009 sale bikes. They include some great commuter options  like the Kona Dew Drop and the Marin Mill Valley. Check them out-

Winter Hours and shorter days at Recycled Cycles

With the beginning of October comes winter mode at Recycled Cycles. As we say goodbye to our seasonal staff and wish our college kids good luck we look back and are thankful for a great season.

Bike Mania-

Bike Mania by Cascade Bike club was Tuesday Aug 4th at Magnuson Park from 12-3. What a fun kid biking event with something for all ages. We did bike safety checks but mostly enjoyed watching the kids cyclocross race. Gerry Baker and his crew set up a mini cross course. We saw bikes of all sizes being piloted by cyclists of every age.

Seattle Heat Wave

The weather outside is boiling. Seattle is a great town but it is unprepared for two things..too much snow and too much heat. Please remember to use sunscreen, eat while you ride and drink plenty of water.

If you are planning a visit to the shop remember we do not have air conditioning. The lines get long on the weekends and when it is hot everyone moves slowly. Please do come by for a visit but don't expect to walk into the cold store a break from the heat.

The staff have unique ways to stay cool. Paul freezes his hat, and Skip will dunk his head in the shower. Perhaps the most surprising way the staff cools off is swimming in Portage Bay. Many ten minute breaks are taken by floating on noodles and doing back flips off the dock.

Stay Cool-Seattle

Seattle Weekly Article

Seattle Weekly recently contacted me to write a small bit about what being green means to me. After thinking for a while a great memory came to mind-

It is late in the 1970’s and my dad and I are driving home from soccer practice in Annandale, Virginia. I was just a kid hoping he would take me to Baskin Robbins for an ice cream…but no. We were headed for Deaver’s Appliance.
